PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to 2nd-ranked Connecticut, 4-1, on October 5 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of play as junior forward Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) connected on her 14th goal of the season. She found the back of the cage on a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads.
Connecticut bounced back to take a 2-1 lead before halftime with goals at 31:30 and 32:26. Chole Hunnable struck first as she deflected a feed from Marie Elena Bolles at the left post. Mckenzie Townsend scored the go-ahead goal during a penalty corner, as she tipped in a ball from Hunnable.
Connecticut held an 8-6 advantage in shots during the opening 35 minutes and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
In the second half, the Huskies tallied two unanswered goals to take control of the game. Hunnable was credited with both tallies during the stretch. Her first came off a rebound, unassisted, at 39:38. She finished off the scoring at the 48:36 mark with a tip-in off a feed from Sophie Bowden.
For the game, Connecticut held a 14-12 advantage in shots. The Friars held the edge in penalty corners, 9-8, including a 6-2 advantage in the second half.
Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) posted nine saves for Providence in the loss. Sarah Mansfield recorded five saves for UConn.
Providence returns to action on Friday, October 11 against BIG EAST foe Temple. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
