Women's Tennis Begins Spring Play At Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team kicks off its spring play on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Fairfield University. The Friars are coming off a 4-1 fall team performance heading into the 2013 spring portion of the season.

The team concluded their fall play by winning the New England Championships on Oct. 14, 2012. Senior captain Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) led the team with a strong undefeated 5-0 record at the No. 1 singles position throughout the fall. Aviles-Duron collected a 15-7 overall record to help the Friars during fall play. On Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 Aviles-Duron broke Brooke Rubin's '02 64 career wins at the No. 1 singles position. Aviles-Duron currently holds the record with 66 career wins at No. 1 singles.

Junior captain Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) also had a standout performance for the Friars with a 4-1 record at the No. 2 singles position and a 12-9 overall record during the fall. Freshman Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) started her career as a Friar with a 9-6 overall record during fall play. Zangari appeared in the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles positions for the Friars throughout the fall.

The Friars will look to build on their 80-52 record during the fall as they head into spring play. After their trip to Fairfield, Conn. the Friars will travel to Albany, N.Y. on Sunday, Feb. 10 to take on Albany at 1:00 p.m.
