Women's Tennis Defeats Manhattan, 6-0

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Manhattan, 6-0, on Saturday, March 3 at the Riverdale Indoor Tennis Club in Riverdale, N.Y. The Friars swept all six singles matches, but the two teams were unable to complete doubles play.

Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) defeated Lil Johnson at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) followed with a victory at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-3, over Hilary Valenzuela. The Friars' Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) kept the momentum rolling with, 6-2, 6-3, victory at No. 3 against Caitlin Bricketto. Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) started fast out of the gate against Brianna Turano at No. 4 singles, as she posted a 6-0 victory in the first set. She took the match with a 7-5 victory in the second. Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) breezed through her No. 5 singles match with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Stephanie Tsao. Alli Carnall(Hatfield, Mass.) finished off singles play with a, 6-4, 6-4, victory at No. 6 singles against Catherine Clark.

Only two of the doubles matches were completed before play was suspended. Manhattan's Johnson and Turano defeated Aviles-Duron and Bernardez at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. The Friars rallied to take a win at No. 2 doubles as Corder and Ahlborn earned an 8-2 decision over Valenzuela and Bricketto. Providence's Ramirez and Nicole Hayes(Hingham, Mass.) were leading 4-3 at No. 3 doubles, but the match was unfinished.
