PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated cross-city rival Brown, 4-1, on Tuesday, October 16 in Providence, R.I. The Friars have won three-straight games and improve to 8-6 overall, while the Bears drop to 3-9 on the year.
Four different Friars scored in the game, which was controlled by Providence from the opening push back. Sophomore Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) scored the Friars' first goal just 1:14 into the game as she one-timed a rebound into the back of the cage off an intial shot from sophomore Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). At the 17:19 mark, sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) put Providence ahead 2-0 as she drilled a reverse stick into the lower right side of the cage from the left side of the circle.
Brown opened the scoring in the second half at the 54:12 mark off a penalty corner. Alexis Miller was credited with the goal as she connected off a feed from Kelsey Grossman.
The Friars answered back at 56:38 to regain their two-goal lead (3-1) at the 56:38 mark. Junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) scored her team-best ninth goal of the season on a reverse stick shot, unassisted. Providence added an insurance goal at 59:01 as junior Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) recorded her fourth goal of the season off a rebound.
Providence out-shot Brown, 21-9, including a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corners were even at five apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) earned the victory for Providence in goal with four saves. Shannon McSweeney notched 10 saves in goal for Brown.
The Friars return to action on Friday, October 19 against BIG EAST foe Rutgers.
