Women's Tennis Falls To UMass, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team lost its home opener to non-conference foe UMass, 5-2, on Thursday, September 27. The Friars lost all three doubles matches, while senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, P.R.) took No. 1 and No. 5 singles flights, respectively.

Aviles-Duron started strong for the Friars with a win over Sonia Bokhari (6-4, 6-3) in No. 1 singles. Junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Rep.) fell to Yuliana Motyl (7-5, 6-0) at No. 2 singles. Freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) were both defeated at No. 3 (6-4, 6-1) and No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) singles, respectively. Ramirez defeated Chanel Glasper in a tough fought No. 5 singles match (3-6, 6-3 (10-7)). Freshman Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) fell in her match to Jocelyn Providence at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-2).

The Friars fell in each of their doubles matches. Aviles-Duron and Bernadez competed in No. 1 doubles, Corder and Prinos competed in No. 2 and Ramirez and Zangari in No. 3 doubles. Each pair lost their matches 8-2.

Bernardez/ Aviles-Duron (PC) vs. Motyl/ Swiszcz (UMass): 8-2 UMass2.  Prinos/ Corder (PC) vs. Bokhari/ Glasper (UMass): 8-2 UMass3.  Zangari/ Ramirez (PC) vs. Podlofsky/ Griffin: 8-2 UMass
