Women's Tennis Swept Weekend Matches

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's tennis swept both matches Saturday, Sept. 29 against Hartford and Holy Cross, beating both teams without losing any singles matches.

Senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) led the Friars in No. 1 singles with wins over Ashley Harel of Hartford (6-0, 6-0) and Jaclyn Carroll of Holy Cross (6-0, 6-0). Aviles-Duron and sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) were the only Friars to win all of their singles matches during the three-game week, out of the two Aviles-Duron was the only one that competed in singles for all three of the matches.

Junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) defeated Katina Zampas of Hartford (6-2, 6-2) and Maya Welch of Holy Cross (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles saw Ramirez and freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) defeat Colleen Beck of Hartford (6-0, 6-2) and Abby Henry of Holy Cross (6-1, 6-1), respectively.

Freshmen Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) defeated Hannah Goldman of Hartford (6-0, 6-3), while sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) blanked Addie Devine of Holy Cross (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. Sophomores Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Caitlin Foley (Holden, Mass.) played at No. 5 singles for the Friars, defeating their opponents (6-1, 6-3) and (6-3, 6-3), respectively. Lastly sophomore Elisabetta Dewitt (Boulder, Colo.) took No. 6 singles against Jessica DeSimone of Holy Cross (6-4, 6-2).

Doubles saw four different pairs win at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Prinos and Corder competed against Zampas and Goldman of Hartford at No. 1 doubles. The young Friar duo defeated the Hawk pair, 8-1. Foley and Hogan faced off against Hartford's Harel and Beck in No. 2 doubles, coming out of the match with a win (8-1). Aviles-Duron and Bernardez advanced their No. 1 doubles record to 7-1 with a win over Carroll and Welch of Holy Cross (8-2). Ramirez and Zangari defeated opponents Devine and Henry of Holy Cross at No. 2 doubles (8-3).

The Friars host Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 3:00 p.m. The match-up against Rhode Island will be the last time the Friars are home for the remaining fall season.
