PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (11-6, 0-3 BIG EAST) fell to Seton Hall (14-2, 3-1 BIG EAST) by the score of 66-57, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, January 7.
Junior guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars in scoring with 23 points and nine assists while sophomore guard Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) added 10 points. The Friars posted a school-high 17 blocks in the match up.
Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates in scoring with 24 points as he was 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Before entering the game, Edwin was 17-of-44 (.386) from three-point territory. Jordan Theodore added 14 points and Herb Pope chipped in with 11.
In a first half, Seton Hall would score first on a 3-pointer, to take a 3-0, but the Friars would respond with a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 edge with 15:55 to play. The two teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the half that included three ties and four lead changes. Tied 23-23 with 6:14 remaining, the Pirates went on a 9-6 run to lead, 32-29, entering the locker room.
The Pirates would go on a 10-5 run to take their largest lead of 11 points, 45-34, with 15:08 left to play. Down by 10 points, Providence went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to one point, 54-53, with 3:40 on the clock.
The game marks the 89th time the two teams have met, with Providence maintaining a 24-13 edge at home and a 45-44 mark overall.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, January 10, when they host their third-consecutive BIG EAST Conference game versus No. 11/10 Louisville at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and the opening tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
