PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team welcomes assistant coach Sam Lopes to the program. He was hired on Friday, August 19. Sam's extensive coaching background will make him a valuable contributor to the squad. A 2002 graduate of Quinnipiac University, Lopes was a member of the Division I men's soccer team during each of his four years.
Following graduation, Lopes went on to play professionally in the United States Soccer Leagues for both the Connecticut Wolves and the Westchester Flames. He also played in the American Indoor Soccer League and Premier Arena Soccer League.
From 2005-2011, Lopes was head assistant women's soccer coach at Southern Connecticut State University. Lopes also held coaching positions with the Boston Breakers of the Women's Professional Soccer League in 2010, the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues women's league team in 2009 and the New England Mutiny, a member of the Women's Premier Soccer League from 2007-2008.
Lopes also worked for the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association as a staff coach for the Olympic Development Program and as a coaching education staff instructor. He also coached for SoccerPlus CT, a youth premier soccer organization. At the Academica Futebol Club youth soccer organization, Lopes held the title of Director of Coaching and Education and Player Development from 2003-2009.
