Women's Tennis Competes At Eastern Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team competed at the Eastern Championships at Army on September 23-25 in West Point, N.Y.

In `A' doubles action, freshmanTaylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Caitlin Foley (Holden, Mass.) fell to Margaret Ilive and Jamila Paul from Army, 8-1, in the Round of 16. In `B' Doubles, freshman Ali Carnall (Hatfield, Mass.) and freshman Elisabetta Dewitt (Boulder, Colo.) defeated Lavinia Cristescu and Erin Suvar of Quinnipiac, 8-5, in the Round of 16. The duo fell in the quarterfinals to Bethany Boyle and Casey Holt of Fordham, 8-2.

In singles play, junior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) advanced to the Quarterfinal Round. She first earned a bye in the Round of 32 before defeating Erin Colton of Army (6-6, 0-30 Ret) in the Round of 16. She eventually fell to Sonia Bokhari of UMass (6-3, 6-3) in the quarterfinals.

In `B' Singles, Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) defeated UConn's Maxie Weinberg (6-4, 6-3) in the Round of 32, before falling to Irina Dementyeva from Fairleigh Dickinson (8-4).

Freshman Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) fell in `C' Singles during play in the Round of 32 (6-1, 6-3) to Holly Pappafotis of Army. Freshman Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) defeated Kari Pope of Army in `D' Singles (6-3, 6-0) in the Round of 32, before falling to Chloe Pike of Stony Brook (9-8(7)). Pike was the eventual `D' Singles champion.

Providence will return to action on September 28 against the University of Rhode Island. The matches are set to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
