Women's Tennis At URI Suspended Due To Darkness

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team competed at the University of Rhode Island on September 28 in Kingston, R.I. Play was suspended due to darkness and is scheduled to be completed on October 12, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

To date, the Rams lead 2-1 and four matches were in the midst of the third set prior to suspension of play.

In doubles, Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Dominigo, Dominican Republic) defeated Pam Emery and Kathleen Uy, 8-3. The Rams rallied for wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, as Karen Ramirez and Caitlin Foley fell to Kirsten Leikem and Tristany Leikem, 8-2, and Taylor Corder and Taylor Ahlborn fell to Nithila Asokaraj and Karolina Wojciak, 8-6.

Only two singles matches were completed prior to darkness and they were split by the Friars and Rams. Foley got a win for Providence as she defeated Michelle Dussol (6-4, 6-0). URI's Asokaraj defeated Ahlborn (6-2, 7-5).

Of the four matches suspended during the third set, URI is leading in two, Providence leads one, and the fourth is tied. At No. 1, Aviles dropped the first set to Emery, 2-6, and came back to win the second set, 6-0. In the third set, Emery leads, 3-2. At No. 2, Bernardez won the first set, 6-3, and dropped the second, 2-6. She currently leads K. Leikem, 2-1, in the third set. Ramirez won the first set at No. 3, 6-1, then dropped the second set, 1-6. In the third set, she trails, 4-1. Corder is holding strong at No. 4 against Uy. She dropped the first set in a tough tiebreaker, 5-7, and rallied to win the second, 6-2. The third set is tied, 2-2.

Results for the Friars' matches against URI will be updated upon the completion of play on October 12.

Providence returns to action against Hartford on Friday, September 30 in West Hartford, Conn. Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
