Syracuse, N.Y. - The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by fellow BIG EAST Conference member, Syracuse, 1-0, on Sunday, September 18 in Syracuse, N.Y. The winning goal was scored in the 87th minute of regulation. The Friars are now 3-3-4 overall and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
In the first half, freshman Allison Walton (Brunswick, Maine) initiated offensive pressure with a shot in the 28th minute that went wide of the goalmouth. In the 41st minute junior Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) took a shot but was denied by Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel. A strong defensive effort kept the Orange from scoring on any of their four shot attempts in the first half.
In the second half, the Friars were unable to capitalize with no shots in the 45 minutes of play. Syracuse totaled six shots on the half, with the final one resulting in a goal. In the 87th minute Laura DeCarlo shot from the right side of the box to score. Brielle Heitman notched the assist.
