HANOVER, N.H. - The Providence College volleyball team split a pair of matches to conclude the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 17. The Friars swept Delaware State (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) before falling to Central Connecticut State in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-27, 20-25). Providence now stands at 5-10 on the season.
Senior middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with 17 kills against Delaware State. She did not commit an error while hitting at a .607 clip. Classmate and fellow captain Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) added nine kills and 33 assists, while a pair of freshmen, Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) and Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) each added six kills. Junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the back row, picking up 17 digs.
Delaware State was led by 13 kills from Jessica Russell-Croucher. Brooke Redman added eight kills for the Hornets. Christobel Fakaosi recorded 30 assists. Sonja Banicevic recorded 13 digs in the effort.
The second match saw Central Connecticut State do its best to hold Fletcher in-check. She notched 16 kills, but on 40 attempts while committing five errors. Fellow senior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) contributed seven kills. Morrison was again outstanding running the offense, recording 34 assists. Muzzonigro contributed 24 digs to key the back row.
The Blue Devils' attack was outstanding. Emily Cochran led the way with 17 kills, while Jamie Rademacher added 14 and Blaike King contributed 13. Setter Danielle Gasser recorded 56 assists, while Brittany Schumacher led the back row with 27 digs. King and Cochran had double-doubles, with 17 and 22 digs, respectively.
For her efforts on the weekend, Fletcher earned a spot on the Dartmouth Invitational All-Tournament team.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, September 21, when they travel to the Bronx, N.Y., to take on Manhattan College. First serve against the Jaspers is set for 7:00 p.m.
