PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Maine, 5-0, on Friday, September 16 at Lennon Field in Providence, R.I. Maine improves to 7-1 overall, while the Friars drop to 2-5.
The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead into halftime as Kelly Newton and Alexa Binnendijk each found the back of the cage. Newton got things started 10:20 into the game as she tipped in a feed from Jocelyn Mitchell at the left post. Binnendijk put Maine ahead, 2-0, during a penalty corner as she ripped a hard shot from the left side of the circle into the lower right side of the cage. Newton was credited with the assist. Maine outshot the Friars, 8-5, in the opening half and also held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, Maine scored three unanswered goals to take the 5-0 win. Newton notched her second tally of the day, unassisted, off a long rebound at 39:28 to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Joscelyn Mitchell then found the back of the cage at the left post after Newton fed her a crossing pass from the baseline on the right side of the field. Newton finished off the scoring and recorded a hat trick at 58:41 when she stopped the insert during a corner and took the initial shot from the top of the circle.
Maine outshot the Friars, 16-3, in the second half and 24-8 for the game. The Black Bears also held a 8-0 advantage in corners during the final 35 minutes and held an 11-2 edge for the game.
Providence (2-5) returns to action on Sunday, September 18 against Michigan State. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field on the campus of Providence College at 2:00 p.m.
