PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Providence College volleyball team opened its 2011 season with a pair of losses to Canisus and Morgan State on Friday, August 26, at the La Salle Invitational. The Friars stand at 0-2 on the season.

Senior captain Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a phenomenal day, putting up 14 kills in the four-set loss to Cansisus, before adding 19 kills in the five-set heartbreaking loss to Morgan State. Fellow senior captain Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) added 16 assist in the first match against the Golden Griffins, followed by 29 in the second match against the Bears. Junior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the back row in both matches, with 22 and 25 digs, respectively.

The opening match saw the Friars take a 25-12 win over Cansisus in the first set, powered by a .417 hitting percentage, before losing the next three sets, 25-16, 25-29 and 26-24. Emily Elek posted a double-double for Canisius with 12 kills and 21 digs. In addition to Fletcher's 13 kills, Morrison added seven kills, as did freshman Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.).

The second match of the day saw the Friars drop a heartbreaker, 3-2, to Morgan State. The Bears took set one, 25-23, despite the Friars out-hitting the Bears, .306-.244. PC rebounded in set two with a 25-29 victory. After Morgan State took a 25-23 win in set three, the Friars forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-15 victory in the fourth. In the fifth set's race to 15 points, the Bears edged Providene, 15-13. After Fletcher's 19 kills, McCollom followed up her solid collegiate debut with 9 kills, while senior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) added eight and freshman Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) added seven kills.

The schedule for the remainder of the La Salle Invitational has been altered due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene. In order to allow the teams travel time before the storm impacts New England, the Friars will take on the host, La Salle, at 7:00 a.m. ET, before wrapping-up the tournament against St. Peter's at 9:00 a.m.
