Loudonville, N.Y. & Providence, R.I. -

The Providence College women's tennis team (4-11; 0-5 BIG EAST) ended a 10-game losing streak on Saturday, April 2 as they defeated Siena (6-4; 1-0 MAAC), 5-2, in Loudonville, N.Y. The Friars had a quick turnaround as they hosted Albany at the Providence College Tennis Courts on Sunday, April 3. The Friars defeated Albany (4-13; 0-1 America East) by a final score of 6-1.

Sophomore No. 1 singles player Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and freshman No. 2 singles player Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) were instrumental in both Friar victories. On Saturday, both women set the tone in singles action by earning decisive straight set victories against Siena's top players in both singles and doubles action. Including their wins on Sunday, both Aviles-Duron and Bernardez have now won four-straight singles matches at their respective spots.

The Friars got all they could handle from Albany on Sunday, April 3. Two of the three doubles matches were decided by four games or less, while four of the six singles matches were pushed to three sets (of which, the Friars won three). Junior Courtney Burek came back from a set down against Albany's Sarah Iannone to earn the victory in the No. 4 slot. Burek's win marked her first of the 2010-11 season. In doubles action, Burek teamed up with freshman Bianca Sciotti (Lincoln, R.I.) to defeat Albany at the No. 3 spot, 8-4.

Burek and Sciotti's doubles win against Siena on Saturday marked the first of the season for the tandem and the first-ever collegiate doubles win for Sciotti.

The Friars will try to extend their two-game winning streak and earn their first BIG EAST victory of the year on Thursday, April 7 when they host St. John's (7-7; 2-2 BIG EAST) at 3:00 p.m. at the Providence College Tennis Courts.
