Women's Tennis Bested by Red Storm, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
On Thursday, April 7, the Providence College women's tennis team fell to St. John's, 5-2, at the Providence College Tennis Courts. In the contest, St. John's took the doubles point, two matches to one, before winning four of the six singles matches. The Friars are now 4-12 overall and 0-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm improved to 9-7 overall with a 4-2 mark in league play.
In singles action, underclassmen Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) earned the two points for the Friars. Aviles-Duron won at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 7-5, while Bernardez made short work of her No. 2 opponent, 6-3, 6-3. Aviles-Duron and Bernardez now hold respective singles records of 16-12 and 13-10. Both players have now won five singles matches in a row dating back to March 29.
In doubles action, senior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) and junior Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) teamed up to earn their second win of the spring season as they defeat St. John's Joanna Zwibulis and Ksenia Mikhaylova at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
The meeting had an international flair, as seven nations (Honduras, Dominican Republic, Serbia, Poland, India, Russia and USA) from four different continents (South America, North America, Asia and Europe) were represented.
The team is back in action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Marquette at the Providence College Tennis Courts. The contest is set for 4 p.m. If inclement weather should arise, the match will be pushed back to 7 p.m. and will be held indoors at Centre Court in East Providence, R.I.
