Pittsburgh, Pa. & Morgantown, W.Va. -
The Providence women's tennis team (2-8; 0-3 BIG EAST) was defeated by three BIG EAST opponents over the past three days. In a late evening match on Saturday, March 12, the Friars fell to Cincinnati (5-10; 4-3 BIG EAST), 7-0, in a neutral site match held at the University of Pittsburgh. On Sunday, March 13, PC made the short trip down I-79 to Morgantown, W.Va. where they suffered their second conference defeat at the hands of West Virginia (5-8; 2-3 BIG EAST), 7-0. Today, the Friars wrapped up their road stint against the Pitt Panthers (5-6; 1-3 BIG EAST) where they fell by a score of 7-0 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
On Saturday, the Bearcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches. Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) tried valiantly to keep the Friars in the match, but ended up falling to their respective opponents in three sets.
On Sunday, the Friars ran into a spirited Mountaineer squad at Ridgeview Racket Club. The Mountaineers stymied all Friar attempts to gain momentum and won the head-to-head match in strong fashion.
In Monday's head-to-head team match against Pittsburgh, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez teamed up to beat Kimmy Borza and Jocelyn Lu, 8-5, at the No. 1 doubles spot. The win marked the first career BIG EAST doubles victory for the tandem. Aviles-Duron and Bernardez are now 12-10 this season at No. 1 doubles.
The Friars continue their seven-match road trip on Saturday, March 26 when they take on Georgetown in a neutral site match in Storrs, Conn.
