Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team scored two short-handed goals and netminder Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) earned her school-record 15th-career shutout as the Friars upended Vermont, 3-0, Saturday at Schneider Arena.

With the decision, PC extends its unbeaten streak to six games, having gone 5-0-1 in the month of November.

Providence scored the lone goal of the opening period, a short-handed strike by senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) at 14:18. The play developed when senior forward Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) broke up Vermont at her own blue line and skated in with a partial breakaway. Vermont goalie Roxanne Douville made the initial stop, but Cottrell trailed the play and hammered the rebound home for her fourth of the year.

Providence converted on its second short-handed goal at the 8:22 mark of the second period. The play started when a pair of Vermont players collided just outside the Friar blue line. PC sophomore Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) jumped on the loose puck and fed junior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario). The speedy winger skated in on a breakaway, brought the puck to her backhand and flipped it up and over the goalie. Vella's third of the season made it 2-0, Providence, heading into the second intermission.

Then hosts added an insurance score late in the third period. At 17:41, senior Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) stole the puck at the left circle and deposited a fore-hand It was her second of the season.

For Lacasse, it was her second shutout in a week, as she blanked UConn, 2-0, last Saturday. In addition, she is now just three career victories shy of the Providence record of 58, currently held by Jana Bugden '07.

The Friars return home tomorrow, November 20, when they welcome #5 Boston University. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC or by visiting Friars.com.
