Box Score

BURLINGTON, VT - Freshman Beth Hanrahan (Poolseville, Md) broke a 3-3 tie with just 29 seconds left in regulation to propel the Providence College women's ice hockey team, 4-3, over host Vermont.

The game winner was scored right off a face-off in the offensive zone, as sophomore Corinne Buie won the draw back to Hanrahan. Without hesitation, the freshman lifted a wrist shot, top shelf over the goaltender's shoulder for her second score of the game.

The Friars had actually led, 3-2, for almost the entire third period. Vermont's Klara Myren knotted the game, 3-3, with just 1:05 left in regulation with a seeing-eye shot from the slot.

Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) earned her first victory of the young season, stopping 17 shots. Vermont's Kelci Lanthier halted 28, as PC outshot the Catamounts, 32 to 20.

Providence jumped on top initially at 9:53 of the first. Freshman Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) skated out from the right corner and sent a beautiful feed in front to classmate Hanrahan. The winger deposited the puck home from the left of the doorstep for her first career score and the start of a memorable day.

After UVM's Brittany Zuback scored on the power play to tie the game, her Catamount's increased the edge to 2-1 with a shorthanded strike at the 15:30 mark. With the Friars set up on the power play, Catamount Chelsea Rapin stole the puck at her own blue line and broke in. Lacasse made the initial save but was challenged by the trailing Erin Wente. The Vermont junior forced puck and goalie over the goal line to light the lamp.

Just forty seconds later, on the same power play, PC senior Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) fed classmate Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) on the right of the doorstep. Bacon backhanded the puck in for her second of the season, and a 2-2 score heading into the first intermission.

Providence scored the lone goal of the middle period. A terrific diving effort by junior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) kept the puck in the UVM zone at the blue line. The puck eventually was played by a lunging Lanthier to the left of the crease. Providence junior Jessica Cohen took the puck away from the netminder, went behind the net and wrapped home her first of the year for a 3-2, PC edge.

The Friars return home on Friday, October 29, when they host Boston College for a rematch of the Hockey East semifinal last March. Face-off is scheduled at Schneider Arena for 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GOPC or by visiting Friars.com.
