Field Hockey Falls To Rutgers, 3-1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST foe Rutgers, 3-1, on Friday, October 14 in Piscataway, N.J. Freshman Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) tallied the Friars' lone goal in the game, while Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) registered nine saves.

A slow start by the Friars allowed the Scarlet Knights to tally two goals early in the first half, during a span of seven minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Cornelia Duffin struck first as she tipped in a pass from Gia Nappi at 11:33. Carlie Rouh connected off a direct shot during a penalty corner at 15:32 for the second goal. Christie Morad and Mackenzie Noda were credited with assists on the play.

Tietze got the Friars within one goal (2-1) at the 28:08 mark of the first half as she found the back of the cage on a corner. Senior Deirdre Quinn (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) were awarded assists.

Rutgers was able to stop the Friars' momentum with a goal just before the half (33:13), as Lisa Patrone dribbled into the circle and scored, unassisted.

The Scarlet Knights outshot the Friars, 16-6, in the decisive first half of play. Providence settled in to outshoot Rutgers in the second half, 4-3, but neither team was able to find the cage in the final 35 minutes. For the game, Rutgers held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 13-8 edge in penalty corners.

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, October 18 against cross-city rival Brown. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field on the Providence College campus.
