TAMPA, Fla. - The Providence College men's basketball fell to South Florida, 79-72, on Sunday, January 16 in Tampa, Fla. The Friars fell to 11-8 (0-6 BIG EAST) as the Bulls improved to 7-12 (1-5 BIG EAST).
Providence led at the half, 41-29, after the Friars shot 59.4 percent from the field (19-32). Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led PC with 15 points in the period, while Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) added 12 in the first half. With 8:00 minutes remaining in the half PC went on a 10-0 run to open up a 16 point lead (32-16) with 5:14 remaining in the first half. With 1:40 remaining until the break, a layup by Brooks gave the Friars a 17 point lead, 38-21, their largest lead of the game. Hugh Robertson led USF with 10 points.
In the second half, the Bulls started out on a 16-5 run cutting the lead to one (46-45) with 13:10 remaining in the game. After USF tied the game at 49 with 11:41 to go, Augustus Gilchrist made a foul shot to complete a three point play and give USF their first lead of the game,50-49. The Friars took a four points lead (58-54) with 7:41 left to play when Brooks scored in consecutive possessions. USF retook the lead, this time for good, at 4:46 when Gilchrist hit a jumper to put the Bulls up, 60-59. The Friars fell by a final margin of 79-72, despite outshooting USF, 45.3 percent to 42.4 percent.
Brooks finished with a game-high 28 points, while Batts posted a career-high 19. Robertson led the way for the Bulls with 17 points, while four other players also scored in double-figures, including 15 points from Jarrid Famous.
Providence College will return to action at home on Saturday, January 22, against No. 17 Louisville. The game begins at 5:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
