Two Providence College Field Hockey Players Earn BIG EAST Accolades

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two Providence College field hockey players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, September 20. Leading the Friars to two victories last week, senior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) and junior Shannon DiStefano (Longmeadow, Mass.) were each recognized for their efforts.

Ruggieri scored five points last week on two goals and one assist. She provided a goal in the Friars', 2-0, victory against Northeastern on September 15. On September 19, she registered a goal and an assist as Providence defeated Columbia, 2-0. With six points on the season, Ruggieri leads the Friars in scoring.

In the game against Northeastern, DiStefano recorded four saves and registered her first career shutout. Against Columbia she tallied three saves and earned her second-straight shutout. She has a 1.51 goals against average and a .765 save percentage in goal this year.

The Friars look to improve on their two game win streak on Friday, September 24 when they open up BIG EAST Conference play against Connecticut. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
