PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (6-10, 0-0) travels to Hamden, Conn., on Wednesday, September 22, for a non-conference showdown with Quinnipiac (2-10, 0-0). The match is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Friars continue to be led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who leads the America East with 3.84 kills per set. Fletcher also ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.333), third in blocks (1.10 per set) and sixth in service aces (0.36 per set), while topping the league in points per set, accounting for 4.84 of the Friars' points per set.
Classmates Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) also help lead the Providence attack. Hendel is posting 1.98 kills per set, while Dolan finds herself in the top-10 in the league in hitting percentage with a .207 clip. The attack is set up by yet another junior, Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who is averaging 7.41 assists per set.
The Friar defense is led by sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) and her 3.66 digs per set. Also anchoring the back row are senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Morrison, who have recorded 2.86 and 1.97 digs per set, respectively.
The Opposition
Quinnipiac University (2-10, 0-0 Northeast) The Bobcats will enter the match with a 2-10 mark, with wins coming against Hartford and Lafayette. They spent last weekend at Lafayette's tournament, where they swept the hosts, while falling in five-sets to both Delaware State and LaSalle.
The Bobcat attack features four players averaging better than 2.00 kills per set, with junior Stephanie Biediger leading the way at 2.39 kills per set. Also above that mark are junior Kelby Carey (2.14 kills per set), graduate student Amanda Armstrong (2.12 kills per set) and sophomore Taylor Payne (2.02 kills per set). The Quinnipiac attack is set up by junior Kayla Lawler, who is averaging 8.64 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore Logan Riker leads the way, with 3.93 digs per set, while Carey adds 3.24 per set.
The Bobcats and Friars have had one common opponent, thus far, on the season - Holy Cross. Quinnipiac fell to the Crusaders in three sets on the road in Worcester, Mass. Providence scored a four-set win over Holy Cross in their home-opener on September 1. Quinnipiac is 1-1 against America East squads on the season, picking up a win over Hartford while falling to Stony Brook. Providence is 2-0 against foes from the Northeast Conference, with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis (N.Y.), both at the seventh annual Friar Classic.
On-Deck
The Friars will travel to Dartmouth on Tuesday, September 28, for their final match before America East play begins. The match with the Big Green is set for 7:00 p.m. The next home match for Providence is Friday, October 1, when it hosts Stony Brook in its first-ever America East match at 6:00 p.m.
