Providence, R.I. -
The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Holy Cross, 6-0, yesterday at the Providence College Tennis Courts. Due to the inclement weather, the doubles matches were cancelled.
The Friars were dominant across the board as all six singles players recorded victories in straight sets. Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was particularly impressive, as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 slot against Molly Montgomery. Freshmen Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Alex Gerry (North Haven, Conn.) recorded triumphs in their first collegiate singles matches. Bernardez and Gerry won 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
With the win, the Friars avenge a Crusader's victory in the spring in which they fell, 4-3. Coach Kyle LaBranche and the Friars have now won the last three out of four meetings against the Crusaders dating back to LaBranche's first season at the College (2008-09).
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant in an intrastate battle. The match-up is set for 3:30 p.m.
