Fairfield, Conn. -

The Providence College women's tennis team fared well in the Sacred Heart Doubles Tournament held over the weekend. Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) made it to the tournament finals.

The tournament was organized as a round-robin event in which each doubles tandem played the three opposing school's once before moving on to the knockout stage. Providence entered three flights in the tournament, with Aviles-Duron and Bernardez representing the No. 1 doubles team, senior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) and junior Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) representing No. 2 doubles and four other Friars combined to represent the No. 3 doubles team.

In their first-ever collegiate doubles match together, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez were beaten, 8-4, in a match against Bryant. The duo quickly rebounded with wins against Sacred Heart (8-7 (5)) and Fairfield (8-4) to take their heat and enter the knockout round as the number one seed overall. In the knockout round, the tandem beat a seasoned Connecticut squad, 8-5, to advance to the finals against Quinnipiac. The Friars trailed early in the match against the Bobcats, but responded by taking consecutive games from QU. Despite a valiant effort, Aviles-Duron and Bernardez would eventually succumb to the Bobcats, 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, veterans Sinha and Ferry posted decisive victories over Hartford (8-0) and Fairfield (8-2). In their second match, Sinha and Ferry dropped a tough tiebreak to Connecticut (8-7(4)) and entered the knockout round as the number two seed. The duo came up short in the semifinals against eventual winner, Quinnipiac (8-2).

In flight number three, two separate tandems of Friars combined to compete in the tournament. The No. 3 doubles teams dropped their first three decisions, but senior Marissa Dalferro (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Kathryn Parry (West Hartford, Conn.) salvaged an 8-6 victory against host school, Sacred Heart, in the elimination stage.

The Friars are back in action on Thursday, September 16 when they host Holy Cross at the Providence College Tennis Courts. The match is set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
