PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-4, 0-0) picked up its first win of the young season in its home opener, dropping the College of the Holy Cross (2-3, 0-0) in four sets (21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-18).
The Friars were again led by the stellar play of junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched 22 kills on the match, good for a .294 hitting percentage. The middle blocker, who was already third in America East in kills per set, raised her average in that category to 4.37.
Helping out Fletcher on the attack was classmate Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.), who registered 11 kills, a season high. In addition, freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio) notched seven kills in her home debut. As usual, it was junior Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) who set-up the attack, notching 38 assists, just missing out on the 40 assist mark for the second-straight match after recording 39 against UNC Greensboro.
Defensively, it was the trio of M's: Morrison, senior Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) keeping the Friars alive. Muzzonigro led the way with 17 digs, followed by Morrison's 14, while Morris added 10. Freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) also added nine digs and a pair of service aces.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle that saw 13 ties and seven lead changes. The last tie score came at 18-18, before Holy Cross's Chelsey O'Donnell notched a service ace to give the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish. Holy Cross would win the set 25-21.
The second set proved to be a momentum-changer, however, as head coach Margot Royer-Johnson saw her Friars hang tough in a set even more dramatic than the first, with 18 ties and 11 lead changes. No team saw a lead bigger than two points, as both squads hit .250 or better for the set. After a Megan Lynch kill gave Holy Cross a 24-23 lead, Lynch had a serve for the set, but put it in the net. The Friars seized the opportunity with Fletcher serving. Morris registered a kill to give the Friars match point and a Fletcher service ace put the set away, 26-24.
Following intermission, the Friars took control, leading the third set wire-to-wire and picking up a 25-20 win. Things went well right from the start, as the service game of the rookie Hall helped the Friars jump out to a 4-0 lead.
The fourth set proved a little more dramatic, with this one featuring nine ties and six lead changes. After falling down 10-7, Royer-Johnson took a time out and her squad responded by taking eight of the next nine points, causing Holy Cross head coach Marritt Cafarchia to call a time out of her own. Holy Cross was not able to take the momentum back and the Friars picked up a 25-18 win for the match.
Providence returns to the court this Friday and Saturday, September 3-4, at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., hosted by Bucknell University. The Friars take on Iona on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before meeting Eastern Michigan at 3:00 p.m. Saturday followed by a 5:00 p.m. showdown with the host Bison.
