PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College volleyball team (0-2, 0-0) dropped a pair of matches to open its 2010 campaign at the Spartan Classic, hosted by Norfolk State University. The Friars fell in three sets in the opener to Kent State (17-25, 15-25, 19-15), before dropping a tough four-set decision to the host team, Norfolk State (25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 21-25).

The Friars were paced by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched double-digit kills in both matches, while also adding nine service aces on the day. In addition, junior Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) both recorded double-digit assists in each match.

The Friars dropped the season opener to Kent State, despite a strong hitting performance from Fletcher, who picked up 10 kills in the match. Providence also had strong defensive efforts from senior Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who each posted double-digit dig totals for the match. Kent State was paced by sophomore Zuzana Markova, who notched 24 assists to go along with 10 kills.

The opening set saw four ties and three lead changes, but the final tie came at 15-15 and the Golden Flashes were able to put a run together and capture the set 25-17. The second set saw Kent State take advantage of nine Friar errors. Providence finally got the attack working in the third set, only to see their .212 hitting percentage eclipsed by Kent State's .344 mark.

Things got out to a much better start in the second half of the twin-bill for head coach Margot Royer-Johnson's squad. The Friars picked up the victory in the first set, thanks to an impressive serving run by Fletcher. After the junior picked up a kill to tie the set at 14, she rattled off nine straight serves, a run that included four aces and staked the Friars to a 22-14 lead before it was over. Providence never looked back and picked up a 25-20 victory.

Providence hung tough in the second and third sets, dropping both by a 25-22 margin. The fourth set was a game of streaks. The Friars jumped out to a 10-6 lead before seeing the Spartans go on a run to build their own 19-14 lead. Royer-Johnson's squad would not quit, however, going on a run of their own that included two more aces by Fletcher, to pull within one point at 22-21. Norfolk State had the answer at the end, though, as the Friars did not score again and fell 25-21.

Fletcher notched a total of 11 kills and nine aces on the match and both Morrison and Powers recorded double-digit assists for the Friars. Norfolk State was led by junior Nicole Kessner, who recorded 44 assists. Most of those were to freshman Arielle Knafel, who notched 23 kills in the match, and sophomore Paige Gary-Canty, who added 13 kills.

The Friars return to the court at the 2010 Spartan Classic on Saturday, August 28, for another pair of matches. Providence takes on Navy at 2:00 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend against UNC Greensboro at 6:00 p.m.
