Women's Tennis Falls to Sacred Heart

The Providence College women's tennis team (5-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) was defeated by Sacred Heart, 6-1, on Wednesday, March 31, at the SHU Tennis Courts. With the win, SHU is now 8-9 on the year.

Providence was led by the play of senior captain Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.). Cusack posted the lone point for the Friar squad as she beat Sacred Heart's Ashley Amalfe, 6-1, 7-5.

Down one set to the Pioneers' Kate Donnelly, Freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) fought her way back into the No. 1 singles match by taking the second set, 6-2. Aviles-Duron would go on to drop the super tiebreak, 10-3.

In doubles action, the tandem of Cusack and Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) fought hard against SHU's Donnelly and Delaney Downing, but were eventually downed in the No. 2 slot, 8-6. Cusack and Burek are looking for their first doubles win together this season.

The Friars will look to get back to their winning ways on Monday, April 5, when they play host to Fairfield at the Providence College Tennis Courts. Fairfield is 10-3 on the year, 3-0 in the MAAC and riding a five-game team winning streak coming into their face-off with the Friars.
