Women's Tennis Falls At Home To Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women's tennis team (5-12, 0-4 BIG EAST) was defeated by Fairfield, 6-1, on Tuesday, April 6. The contest was held at home at the PC Tennis Courts.

Junior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) got some redemption as she teamed up with Freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) to defeat Paulina Rys and Kristen Liu in a close No. 1 doubles match. Sinha had previously lost to Rys in the 2009 West Point Eastern Invitational, 8-4. Rys and Liu pushed the PC duo to a tiebreak before falling to the Friars by a final tally of 8-7 (7-1). The Friars lost the doubles point, as they dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.

In singles action the Friars struggled to win more than two games in any set. However, Aviles-Duron did her part by winning a close first set, 7-5. Her opponent, Fairfield's Dana Postupack, would retire in the second game of the second set due to an injury. With the win, Aviles-Duron improves to 15-14 overall in No. 1 singles play.

The rest of the Friars dropped all their matches in two-set losses to the Stags. With the victory, the Stags are now 12-5 on the year.

The Friars are back on the courts Saturday, April 10 when they challenge Holy Cross at the PC Tennis Courts. The contest is set for a 12:00 p.m. start. During the 2008-09 season the Friars were edged, 4-3, by the Crusaders in a heated competition that saw two singles matches go to three sets and two doubles matches decided by two games or less. In September 2009 the Friars defeated the Crusaders in convincing fashion, 6-1. Providence is 4-1 against Holy Cross since 2006.
