The Providence College women's tennis team was defeated by the Connecticut Huskies, 6-1, on Wednesday, March 24. With the loss, the Friars are now 2-8 in the spring season, 5-9 on the year and 0-3 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies improve to 1-2 in the BIG EAST and 4-8 overall.
The match was the first spring home meeting for the Huskies.
In doubles play, freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) competed valiantly, but ultimately dropped the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, to UConn's Kelley LoRusso and Katie Moritz.
Aviles-Duron got a small amount of vengeance as she dropped UConn's LoRusso, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles match. With the win, Aviles-Duron is now 4-6 in spring season singles play.
Senior Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) played well for the Friars in the No. 5 singles spot, keeping the match competitive against UConn's Abby McKeon. However, Cusack came up short in the end, losing 6-4, 6-5.
The Friars are back in action this Saturday, March 27 as they host the Syracuse Orange at the Providence College Tennis Courts. Doubles matches are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. with the singles matches immediately following the completion of the doubles.
The next four of five match-ups for the Friars will take place on their home courts. Two of the next four matches are against BIG EAST foes.
