The Providence College Friars were defeated by No. 5 Syracuse, 81-74, on Tuesday, December 28 in Syracuse, N.Y. It was the first game of the 2010-11BIG EAST Conference regular season for both teams. The Friars fall to 11-3 on the season as the Orange improve to 14-0.
The Friars trailed at the half, 42-32, after the Orange shot the ball well in the first half, making 7-15 three-point attempts. Kris Joseph led Syracuse with 17 points and three rebounds. Providence was paced by senior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) who also tallied 17 points and three rebounds.
In the second half, the Orange lead grew as large as 16 points (65-49) with 9:09 remaining in the game. The Friars got within four points (71-67) with 2:22 left to play when Brooks' 3-point attempt that would have cut the Orange lead to one rimmed out. The Friars could not get closer than four points the rest of the way as they fell to 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
Brooks finished with a game-high 27 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) posted 11 points and nine rebounds. Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) and Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both reached double figures, scoring 12 and 10, respectively.
Providence College will return to action at home on Saturday, January 1 against St. John's at 7 p.m. on Cox at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
