PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated visiting Union, 2-1, Sunday at Schneider Arena.
After a scoreless first period, PC's power-play unit struck 1:52 into the second. Junior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) sent a pass from the right point into the slot. The puck was deflected to classmate Abby Gauthier while she stood alone on the doorstep. Gauthier deposited her fourth of the season for the 1-0 Friar edge.
Providence extended the cushion to 2-0 at the 7:39 mark of the third period. With another power play expiring, junior Jen Friedman intercepted a clearing attempt at the right point. Friedman unloaded a slapshot that beat Dutchwomen goalie Kate Gallagher for her third goal of the year.
Union cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 10:45 mark of the third, when junior Kelly Alyea fought for possession in the left corner and fed classmate Emilie Aresenault. Aresenault responded with a wrist shot into the back of the net.
Friar netminder Genevieve Lacasse made 17 saves to earn the victory, including several in the final seconds after Union brought in the extra attacker. Gallagher stopped 29 shots.
The win capped a perfect weekend against ECAC opponents for Providence, as the team defeated host Brown for the 16th annual Mayor's Cup on Friday, 3-2.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, December 4, when they welcome Hockey East rival New Hampshire to Schneider Arena. Face-off is at 1 p.m. and tickets are available by calling the PC ticket office at (401) 865 GOPC.
