CANCUN, MEXICO - The Providence College Friar men's basketball team was defeated by La Salle University, 84-73, on Tuesday, November 23 in the third round of the Cancun Challenge. The Friars arrived in Cancun having won their first two games of the Challenge at home, defeating Morgan State, 77-55, on November 18 and Prairie View, 78-62, on November 20.
The La Salle zone defense held the Friars to 28 points in the first half as sophomore Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Earl Pettis had 14 points to pace La Salle over the first 20 minutes of action to a 44-28 lead.
In the second half, the Friars fought back and cut the lead to six points, 61-55, with 6:57 remaining after a Duke Mondy three pointer. However, that is as close as the Friars could get the rest of the way as La Salle closed out the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Friars suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 4-1.
Senior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Council finished with 17 points and freshman Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) added 12 points.
Aaric Murray had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead La Salle. Providence College will return to action for its final game of the Challenge versus either No. 15/14 Missouri or Wyoming at 7:00 p.m. EST.
