PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's tennis team (1-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) was defeated, 7-0, by intrastate rival Rhode Island (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic 10) yesterday afternoon at the Providence College Tennis Courts. The contest was originally scheduled for September 28, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Rams beat the Friars in convincing fashion, taking all the singles matches in straight-sets with the exception of the No. 1 singles contest between PC's Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and URI's Pam Emery. Aviles-Duron lost the first set, 7-5, before breaking Emery's serve in the second set to take it, 6-4. The match came down to a super tiebreak in which Aviles-Duron came up two points shy of the victory (10-8).
Aviles-Duron fared better in doubles play as she teamed up with freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) to defeat URI, 8-6, at No.1 doubles. The tandem's efforts were all for not, as the Rams took the doubles point two matches to one.
The Friars look to rebound this weekend when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to compete in the Marist Invitational. The team will then host Hartford on Thursday, October 13, at 3:00 p.m. in a meeting originally scheduled for September 30.
