PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's tennis team (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) used its might to edge out Hartford (0-2, 0-0 America East), 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Providence College Tennis Courts. The victory marks the 12th-straight triumph over the Hawks, dating back to the 2001-02 season.
The Friars took a one-point lead by virtue of winning two of the three doubles matches. In the doubles matches, underclassmen Marisela Aviles-Duron and Maria Clara Bernardez defeated Hartford's No. 1 tandem, 8-1. The Friar duo now boasts a 9-2 No. 1 doubles record on the season and is undefeated in their last four outings. After the No. 1 doubles victory, seniors Melissa Ferry and Ayushi Sinha sealed the doubles point for the Friars by defeating the Hawks' No. 2 team, 8-6.
In singles action, Aviles-Duron made short work of Hartford's Maggie Sabatino at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-1. Sinha and Ferry continued their winning ways by earning decisions at the No. 3 (6-1, 6-4) and 4 (7-5, 6-2) spots, respectively. The Friars sealed the win with the three straight-set singles wins along with the doubles point. In perhaps the most competitive match of the contest, Bernardez was taken to a super tiebreak set after easily winning the first set, 6-1, and dropping the second, 6-7 (5-7). The freshman kept her composure and pulled out win by a final tally of 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5. Bernardez is now 6-2 at No. 2 singles on the year.
The Friars will compete in the New England Championships in Fairfield, Conn., this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17. The event will be hosted by Sacred Heart.
