The Providence College women's tennis team (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) posted individual results in the six singles and the three doubles tournament flights up for grabs at the New England Championships held over the weekend. The event was held in Fairfield, Conn.
Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) led the Friars, as she posted straight-set victories in the No. 1 Singles Flight over Hartford and Fairfield before falling in the championship to Bryant's Claudia Hidalgo, 6-0, 4-6, (10-7). Freshman Alex Gerry (North Haven, Conn.) finished fourth in the No. 6 Singles Flight. Gerry posted her first collegiate tournament victory over Sacred Heart's Michelle Aptekin in the first round, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, Aviles-Duron and freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) teamed up to place third in the No. 1 Flight. The Friars defeated Sacred Heart in the first round, 8-2. The duo then lost to the eventual champions--Bryant's Claudia Hidalgo and Lucy Bird--by the same score. The Friars rebounded by handling Fairfield in the third-place consolation match, 8-6.
