Providence Volleyball Swept By Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a match at Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon, falling in straight sets (17-25, 18-25, 18-25). The Friars fall to 10-20 on the season, 2-7 in America East play. The Seawolves improve to 10-15, 5-4 in league play.

The Friars were led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) who notched 13 kills while hitting at a blistering .565 clip. Classmate Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added six kills for Providence. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 21 assists. Sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the defense with nine digs while senior Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.) added eight digs.

Stony Brook was led by Alicia Nelson, who picked up 14 kills. Ashley Headen added 12 kills for the Seawolves. They utilized two setters, as Kelsey Sullivan picked up 22 assists and Corinne Perry recorded 17 assists. Greta Strenger led the back row with 11 digs, while Nelson just missed a double-double with nine kills.

Providence just could not overcome a powerful Stony Brook attack, which hit .343 for the match. The Seawolves hit .379 in the first set, en route to a 25-17 win. They stepped it up from that in the second, taking the set 25-18 behind a .419 clip. The final set saw Stony Brook hit .262 to take the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

Providence returns home next weekend for their final two home regular-season matches. On Friday, November 5, the Friars host Binghamton at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 6, will be the final home contest of the season, as the squad will honor its three seniors, Snyder, Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Kourtney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.), before playing Albany at 5:00 p.m.
