PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer defeated DePaul University on Friday, October 15, to improve to 9-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in BIG EAST play. With the lose, DePaul falls to 10-5-2 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Sophomore Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season in the seventh minute to give the Friars the early lead. Junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) notched her second goal of the season and the eventual game winner in the 77th minute. DePaul's Michelle Scandora scored in the 84th minute, but the Friars would hold on to the lead.
The Friars started the game off strong with a quality scoring opportunity in the fourth minute when freshman Tota Olafsdottir (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland) slotted a pass to Webster who put the ball on net. DePaul's goalkeeper, Claire Hanold made a diving save to prevent the goal. Three minutes later, Providence would get on the board. Freshman Kerry Ann O'Connor passed the ball back to Olafsdottir who then crossed the ball to Webster. Webster headed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. DePaul's best scoring opportunity came with 11:46 left on the clock. Senior Tara Strickland ripped a shot from the top left corner of the 18-yard box that was just right of the target.
DePaul almost tied up the match in the 61st minute when senior Callie Hemming dribbled through the box and by the keeper. Hemming took an off balance shot and hit the post. Collins scored her second goal of the season and the eventual game winner in the 77th minute. She beat a defender on the left side line and took a shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the keeper and into the net.
In the 84th minute, DePaul notched its own goal off a corner kick. Tara Strickland crossed the ball in and Michelle Scandora ripped a shot that was blocked by a Providence defender. The ball came back to Scandora who took another rip and this time found the back netting. However, Friars would hold onto the lead and earn the victory.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. when they close out their 2010 home schedule and host No. 5/7 Notre Dame. On Sunday, five seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony for their commitment and service to the program. .
