The Providence College volleyball team (9-15, 1-3) will play host to UMBC (6-12, 2-2) in America East play on Sunday, October 17. The match is set for 1:30 p.m. at Mullaney Gymnasium. It marks the only league match of the week for the Friars, while the Retrievers will face New Hampshire on Saturday, October 16, before traveling to Providence.
Providence College (9-15, 1-3 America East) The Friars are led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who is coming off a 28-kill match against Central Connecticut State. The middle blocker is second in America East in kills per set (3.69), hitting percentage (.321) and blocks per set (1.10). The attack also gets contributions from juniors Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.), who are averaging 1.84 and 1.83 kills per set, respectively.
The Providence back row is led by sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who has moved up to third in the conference in digs per set at 3.87. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) ranks ninth in the league, with 2.93 digs per set, while adding 0.31 service aces per set, good for seventh in the league. The defense as has been strong in the front and back rows, as Providence leads the league in opponent hitting percentage (.183)
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (6-12, 2-2 America East) UMBC enters their weekend matches led by senior Sabrina Hoeks, who leads the team with 2.80 kills per set. The Retrievers attack also boasts one of the top freshmen in the league, as two-time America East Rookie of the Week Ali Goc is second on the team with 2.46 kills per set.
The UMBC back row is led by another freshman, Hallie Carter, who is recording 3.72 digs per set. Hoeks adds 2.89 digs per set, while Goc checks-in with 2.44 digs per set and junior Allie Spay has recorded 2.45 digs per set. Spay, who has only played in 22 of the Retrievers' 61 sets, leads the squad with 202 total assists (9.32 per set), while a pair of freshmen, Rebecca Garrigues (4.55 assists per set) and Mallory McIntyre (3.73 assists per set), have seen time at setter as well.
In addition to America East foes, the Friars and Retrievers have two common opponents on the season. Both teams secured sweeps over Coppin State, while both also played Brown. The Retrievers defeated the Bears in four sets while Providence fell to Brown.

Next week, the Friars travel up the road for a non-conference showdown with Bryant on Wednesday, October 20, before back-to-back league showdowns with New Hampshire on Friday, October 20, in Providence and Sunday, October 22, in Durham, N.H.
