Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -

The Providence College women's tennis team (1-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) won four of the seven contested tournaments and made it to the finals of six in the Marist Invitational that was held over the weekend. The Friars took home three of the four singles tournament titles and the Flight A doubles tournament.

On Saturday, the Friars were dominant as they combined to win eight out of their nine singles matches. All eight of the wins were determined in straight sets. With Saturday's victories, the Friars saw sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), freshman Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), and senior captain Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) make it to the semifinals in the Flight A, B, and C tournaments, respectively. Sophomore Kathryn Parry (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) each made it to the semifinals in the Flight D tournament draw.

On Sunday, the Friars picked up where they had left off as Bernardez dished out losses to Marist (6-4, 6-2) and Albany (6-0, 6-2) to take home the hardware in the Flight B tournament. Ferry eased her way to the Flight D singles title, breezing past Albany's Melissa Coughlin (6-1, 6-1) after defeating Fordham's Jennifer Mullen (6-3, 7-5) in the semis. Aviles-Duron had a tougher go of it, as she had to come back from a one-set deficit to take the title from Fordham's freshman phenom Angelika Dabu in a tight match that went to a super tiebreak (4-6, 6-4, 10-7). The Friars had their eyes set on the singles tournaments sweep, but fell four points short when Sinha relinquished a one-set lead and eventually fell in the super tiebreak to Albany (4-6, 6-3, 10-6).

The impressive singles play by the squad transferred over to the doubles tournaments as Aviles-Duron and Bernardez teamed up to win three matches to take the Flight A doubles tournament title. The tandem of Sinha and Ferry made it to the Flight B finals before falling to Siena, 8-3.

The tournament, which took place on Saturday and Sunday, included participants from Albany, Siena, Fordham, St. Peter's and the host institution, Marist.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, October 13, when they host Hartford at the Providence College Tennis courts in a meeting that was originally set for September 30, but was postponed due to inclement weather. The match is set for 3:00 p.m.
