Tennis Competes At ITA Eastern Championships

West Point, N.Y. - The Providence College tennis team competed at the ITA Eastern Championships at West Point, N.Y. The event was held from Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27 at the United States Military Academy.
Leading the way for the Friars was freshman No. 1 singles player, Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras). Aviles-Duron won the first round match against Samantha Inacker of Colgate, 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, Aviles-Duron defeated the fifth overall seed, Elizabeth Adams of Pittsburgh, 6-2, 6-2. Aviles-Duron's run came to a halt in the quarterfinals, as she was bested by fourth seeded Christine Ordway of Cornell, 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 singles player Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India), No. 3 singles player Melissa Ferry (Cumberland, R.I.) and No. 4 singles player Courtney Fuller (Newtown, Conn.) each dropped the first match in their respective main brackets as well as their respective consolation brackets.
In doubles play, the Friars did not fair much better. No. 1 doubles duo Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) and Brittany Maddock (Marietta, Ga.) were defeated by Marina Bykoskaya and Yulia Smirnova of Binghamton, 8-0, in the first round. Meanwhile, No 2. doubles pair Melanie Albert and Jennifer Cusack lost a hard-fought match against Carly Loewenstein and Ali Warchavsky of Qunnipiac, 8-6.
The Friars look to rebound as they host intrastate rival Rhode Island on Thursday, October 1 at 3:30 p.m.
