PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's tennis team fell to in-state rival Rhode Island on Wednesday, October 1, by a final score of 7-0.
Each singles match was decided in two sets with the exception of the No. 1 singles match between Providence freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron and Rhode Island sophomore Kirsten Leikem. Aviles-Duron made short work of the first set, winning 6-1, but dropped the next two sets to Leikem, 6-3, 10-2. With the loss, Aviles-Duron drops to 5-2 in No. 1 singles play.
The loss marks the first for the Friars in head-to-head team meetings, dropping the team to 3-1 on the year. With the victory, the Rams improve to 2-0 on the year, having won both head-to-head matches on the road.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 10, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to compete in the Marist Invitational.
