PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College tennis team bested intrastate foe, Bryant University, 5-2, in a hard-fought match on Wednesday, September 23. The Providence College women's tennis team has not started 3-0 since the 2003 fall season when they defeated Hartford, Fairfield and Vermont in consecutive head-to-head matches.
The Friars were once again led by the outstanding play of freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) who started the match with an 8-5 win in No. 1 doubles play thanks to some great finesse work at the net. Unfortunately, the Friars would go on to lose the doubles point, 1-2.
In singles play, Aviles-Duron continued her extraordinary play by downing Morganne Downing, 6-0, 6-1. With the win, Aviles-Duron improves to 3-0 at No. 1 singles, having only given up two games in those matches. The Friars also received strong play from No. 2 singles player, Sinha and No. 4 singles player, Melanie Albert (Sanibel, Fla.), both of which put down their opponent in straight sets.
The Friars are back in action Friday, September 25 as they travel to West Point, N.Y. to compete in the Eastern Championships at Army.
