Worcester, Mass. -
The Providence College women's tennis team (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) won its first head-to-head road match-up, 6-1, against the College of the Holy Cross (0-1, 0-0 Patriot League) on Thursday, September 18.
The Friars swept singles play behind the great play of freshman newcomer, Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) Aviles-Duron did not lose a game in the No.1 singles match and teamed up with Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) to defeat Holy Cross in the No.1 doubles match. Aviles-Huron has lost only one game in her first two singles matches since joining the Friars.
The rest of the singles matches were decided by razor-thin margins. Five of the six matches went to three sets. Freshman Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) dropped her first set in the No.3 singles match against Emily Mark, but quickly rebounded, winning the second set, 6-4, and the third by an even larger margin. Coach Kyle LaBranche said, "After a slow start she really went to a different gear for the third set."
The one point that the Friars dropped came from doubles play, where PC dropped two of three matches, including a decisive tiebreak.
The Friars are back in action Wednesday, September 23 when they host Bryant University.
