BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at seventh-ranked Vermont, 4-1, Friday night in a Hockey East game at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Catamounts scored three third-period goals en route to the victory.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead as senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) scored his seventh goal of the season and fifth on the man advantage. Freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) played the puck behind the net to senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) who slid a pass right in front to Norton whose one-timer beat UVM netminder Rob Madore at 8:58.
The Catamounts evened the score at the 3:45 mark of the second period when Peter Lenes poked in a rebound into the empty net. Kyle Medvec and Dean Strong assisted on the goal. Lenes nearly gave Vermont the lead when he skated in on a breakaway, but his back-handed attempt was turned aside by freshman Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.), who finished with 15 saves in the second period and 28 for the game.
However, the Catamounts did take the lead soon after the opening faceoff of the third period. Corey Carlson scored off a wrist shot from the right circle just 11 seconds into the period as UVM gained the lead for good. The Friars had a chance to even the score two minutes later when Norton was open in the slot and fired a shot that was saved by Madore (25 saves) with the left pad. UVM increased its lead to 3-1 at 9:50 when Washontiio Stacey scored off a three-on-one rush. The Catamounts completed the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:20.
The two teams will complete the weekend series Saturday night.
