BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-1, at seventh-ranked Vermont Saturday night in a Hockey East game played at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Catamounts took a 1-0 first period lead as Viktor Stalberg scored his team leading 17th goal of the season. Stalberg took a pass at the bottom of the left circle and fired a shot that glanced off the right shoulder of PC goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) and into the net. The Friars controlled the rest of the period as they outshot Vermont, 11-4, and had three power-play chances, but were unable to score the equalizer.
However, the Friars capitalized on the power play to even the score at 8:02 of the second period. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) fired a back hander from the right side of the net that deflected off Rob Madore's pads and into the net. Freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) and junior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) assisted on the goal. It marked Mazzolini's fourth goal in the last four games. Vermont then scored twice to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Brian Roloff gave the Catamounts a 2-1 lead at 11:49, while Kyle Medvec scored at 17:44 for the two-goal advantage. Stalberg capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal, his second of the night and 18th of the season.
The Friars finished with a 30-17 shot advantage, including a 14-2 edge in the third period. Madore totaled 29 saves, while Beaudry stopped 13 shots.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, February 13 with a road game at the University of New Hampshire.
