PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (8-4) defeated Yale University (4-7) by a score of 87-78 on Monday, Dec. 21 in the Friars' final nonconference game of the 2009-10 season. Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with 25 points and 13 rebounds to record his third-straight double-double and his seventh in the last 10 games. His 25-point performance was his fifth 20-point outing of the season.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-4 lead, prompting an early PC timeout. A deep 3-pointer by Alex Zampier extended the Bulldogs' lead to eight at 16-8 and a jumper by Michael Sands built the advantaged to 11 at 23-12 at the 11:24 mark of the first half. The Friars responded with a 13-4 run to cut the Bulldogs lead to two at 27-25, fueled by nine points from junior guard/forward Kyle Wright (Hartford, Conn.). A 3-pointer by senior guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) gave the Friars their first lead (34-32) since the 19:27 mark of the half, but Yale finished the half strong and took a 40-36 lead into intermission.

Yale shot 47.4 percent (18-38) from the field in the half, out-rebounded the Friars 21-18 and made nine assists to PC's four. Zampier led the Bulldogs with 15 first-half points.

After the two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, a good finish by Yale's Reggie Willhite extended the Bulldogs' advantage to 59-52 with 13:20 to go in the game. With Yale leading 61-58, Jamine Peterson drove to the rim and completed a thunderous dunk to move the Friars within one. A 3-pointer by Brooks gave PC its first lead of the second half at 65-63. A strong drive and finish by freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) build the PC lead to five at 71-66 with 4:52 left in the 6-2 guard made an impressive dunk shot to give the Friars their largest lead of the game at 11 (79-68). On their next possession, Zampier hit a jumper for the Bulldogs to give the team its first field goal in 10:37 minutes of play. PC outscored Yale 25-9 during the drought.

The Friars shot 50.7 percent from the field for the game, including a 54.3 percent clip in the second half. The Friars also went 15-of-20 from the free throw line (75.0 percent).

Council, Curry and Brooks all posted double-figure scoring totals for the Friars, posting 13, 13 and 13 points, respectively. PC improves 8-0 when leading with five minutes remaining in the game.

The Friars return to action on Dec. 30 as they open up BIG EAST play at Notre Dame. The game will be televised locally on Cox Sports Television at 9 p.m. ET.
