Five Friars Earn All-Independent Volleyball Honors

Five members of the Providence College volleyball team earned All-Independent Volleyball honors on Tuesday, December 2. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) was named to the All-Independent First Team, while senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.), sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) were each All-Independent Honorable Mentions. In addition to athletic honors, Fletcher, Majewski and junior middle blocker Meredith Gent (Reading, Mass.) earned All-Independent Academic accolades.

Fletcher led the Friars with 287 kills, a .289 season hitting percentage, 87 total blocks and 25 solo blocks in 2009. She averaged 2.93 kills and 0.91 blocks per set, recorded double-digit kills in 16-of-26 matches and hit at .375 or better in nine contests. Fletcher posted a career-high 19 kills in matches against Bucknell on Sept. 6 and Lehigh on Sept. 11 and notched a career-best nine total blocks versus Bryant on Oct. 6. For her efforts during the season, she earned Niagara Invitational, Volley in the Valley and Friar Classic All-Tournament honors and was named the Independent Volleyball Player of the Week on Sept. 15.

Majewski ranked second on the Friars with 210 kills in 2009, averaging 2.19 kills per set. She recorded 10 or more kills in 19 matches and led Providence with a career-high 17 kills at Holy Cross on Sept. 2. She also recorded 14 kills and seven digs at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sept. 30.

Morrison ranked first on the Friars with 722 assists, second with 36 service aces and third with 167 digs. She averaged 7.5 assists per set and posted at least 30 assists in 11-of-26 matches. Morrison led PC with six double-doubles on the year. She recorded 28 assists, 10 digs, nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage against Central Connecticut on Oct. 14 and tied a career-high with 45 assists in wins against Bucknell on Sept. 6 and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sept. 30. For her efforts this season, Morrison was named Independent Player of the Week on Oct. 13 and earned Friar Classic All-Tournament honors on Sept. 26.

Muzzonigro led the Friars with 340 digs, the most by a Providence freshman since 2006. She averaged 3.5 digs per set and posted a .902 season reception percentage, recording zero reception errors in four matches. Muzzonigro recorded double-digit dig totals in 17-of-26 contests and registered a career-high 29 digs against Bryant on Sept. 5.
