PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont 4-0 on Sunday, November 1, in Burlington, Vt. With this victory, the Friars end the season with a 10-9 overall record including a 3-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence, the number four seed, will host the four-team BIG EAST Tournament at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on November 7 and 8.

Nicole Fernandez (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game for the Friars at the 4:07 mark. The assist on the goal was provided by Kelly Grogan (Allenwood, N.J.) The Friars next goal came shortly after at the 6:38 mark. Grogan scored out of a penalty corner with assists credited to Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) and Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.). The final goal of the first half came at 17:24 when senior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) scored out of a penalty corner. Hudson and Lipski were again credited with assists on Marois' goal. The Friars entered halftime with a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Providence added its final goal when Hudson scored a goal at the 41:06 mark. Ali Shover (Camp Hill, Pa.) provided the assist on the goal. The Friars continued to play good defense and held Vermont scoreless. The team has not allowed a goal in the past four games.

Goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) was credited with the victory and improves her record to 9-8 on the season. Chamberlain played 49 minutes and recorded two saves on the day. Freshman Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) replaced Chamberlain and the two goalies combined for the shutout.

The Friars held the advantage in shots, 24-9, as well as penalty corners, 9-7.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 7 when they face No. 5 Syracuse at 11:00 p.m. The game will be the first semifinal match of the BIG EAST Tournament. Although the Friars will be the visiting team, Providence will be the tournament host and all games will be held at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
