The Providence College men's soccer team will face No. 6 Harvard on Tuesday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference match at Glay Field.
Providence (5-5-3, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) is coming off a 1-1 double overtime tie against Seton Hall on Saturday, October 17 at Glay Field. Graduate student Roy Sandeman (Edinburgh, Scotland) converted a penalty kick with 4:18 remaining in the second half to tie the game and send it to overtime. Classmate Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) made six saves for the Friars, who finished with a 23-14 shot advantage. Senior Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) leads the team in scoring with six points on three goals, while junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) is second with five points (two goals, one assist).
Harvard (9-2-1, 2-0-1 Ivy League) bounced back from a 4-0 loss at No. 17 Connecticut on Wednesday, October 14 and defeated No. 15 Brown, 1-0, on Saturday, October 17. Senior Andre Akpan scored the lone goal early in the second half, while Austin Arms made four saves to earn the shutout. Akpan leads the team in scoring with eight goals and five assists, while Brian Rogers is second with five goals and four assists. Arms has started 11 of the 12 matches and has five shutouts.
Providence is looking for its first win over Harvard since 1999 when the Friars posted a 3-2 overtime road victory. Last season, the Crimson defeated the Friars, 3-1, at Harvard. The last time the two teams faced each other in Providence, Harvard posted a 2-1 victory in 2007. Providence is 2-9-0 all-time against Harvard.
Following the Harvard match, the Friars will close out their home schedule with a BIG EAST game against Marquette on Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the match, Providence will honor its graduating seniors.
